Martie Porter

Hello Martie Porter! After (both of us) posted your pictures on facebook I think many people are really blown away by your “new look”, but many people have no idea about your background or your (weight loss) history.

Q: Could you share a little bit ABOUT YOU:
Well, I have really struggled with weight all my life. For most of it, I was about 20-30lbs overweight. That was until the early 90’s when several very stressful situations hit me all at once. I ate my way through the stress and gained about 70 more lbs. hitting an all time high of 244 lbs.
I was disgusted with myself and too embarrassed to join a gym, so decided I’d start Weight Watchers and do workouts from home. I was successful with that and lost 70 lbs in the first 6 months. After that, I lost and gained the same 10 lbs about 6 times over a 5 year period. I was really struggling, couldn’t seem to get my body to budge. Another problem was I lost the weight, but wasn’t toned. I still had too much body fat. Needed to lose another 25 lbs. to get to my goal but decided that more than anything, I wanted to exchange fat for muscle. That’s when I decided to check out the Fitness Asylum; where in 8 months time, I’ve achieved far more than I ever thought possible.

Q: Do you mind sharing how old you are? I ask this and think it’s important because many people think after 40 – why bother… Or that our destiny to is to age, grow old and fall apart. I think you prove that to be faulty logic!

I just turned 51 and am in the best shape of my life. I wanted no part of getting fat & sedentary as I aged. My goal was to be thin & fit and I got it.
You don’t have to accept the typical results of aging. Defy them!. Stay active and eat healthy. Anyone can be fit & healthy, you just have to buckle down and do it. The Challenge will teach you how.
If this is what you’ve always wanted, don’t wait…do it now. It’s never too late!

Q: Before you came to The Fitness Asylum, what was your workout schedule like?

I was very active. Worked out every day, sometimes twice a day. The only problem was I wasn’t doing the right stuff. I remember someone saying to me “you should be a twig, you work out so much”. I thought so too, but couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t until I got to the Fitness Asylum. I learned that I needed much less aerobic and more strength training. In fact, I could cut my workouts to 3 or 4 a week if I did the right workout and get better results. That was significant; who’s not strapped for time these days.

When you do the Body Challenge, you get far more than just a workout, you learn so much about proper exercise, nutrition and overall fitness!

Q: What were you hoping for when you started working out at The Asylum?

I thought it was time to switch things up to see if I could budge from my plateau. Not only did I break the plateau, I met my all my goals and I’ve learned so much. I only wish I had this knowledge years ago, but as they say, better late than never!

Q: I believe you started with Kettlebells, what are your thoughts on that workout?

Love, Love, Love kettlebells!! Talk about a complete body workout. It’ll kick your butt, but it’s fantastic. If you want to be lean and strong there’s no better combination than Kettlebells & the Body Challenge!

Q: Can you give a few details about starting THE BODY CHALLENGE at The Fitness Asylum? When did you start, and what was your initial feeling about changing the way you were going to approach food and eating?

The body Challenge changed my life! I am so glad I did it.

I remember I was really nervous about the workouts ~ wondered if I could actually do them; also worried about whether I could stick to the nutrition plan~seemed pretty strict. I was so ready for change though, that I decided from the get go that I was just going to stick to the program for the 12 weeks and see if it worked. I was amazed to find that after the first two weeks, I had NO more cravings; no more food closet calling my name! I didn’t have to rely on motivation to get me through. It has become a way of life. For the first time in 50 years, I can honestly say I eat to live not live to eat! You do have to be prepared. I shop more frequently for fresh, whole foods. As for the workouts, you go at your level & pace. Of course. Bonnie’s going to push you, but that’s what we pay her for right?

Q: What were your results from the Challenge?MartieAfter
I joined the Summer 2011 Body Challenge. During this Challenge, I lost 17 lbs. I was so thrilled with my results I decided to join the Fall Challenge and lost another 10 lbs. Since joining the Fitness Asylum, I’ve dropped my body fat from 28% to 19% and increased my lean mass from 71% to 80%. I’ve had so many compliments. People are telling me I look 10 years younger and I’m so much more toned. Yes, I have muscles…check out my boxing picture on the website. Who’d have ever thought that a 51 year old grandmother could have those muscles! It’s an awesome feeling!

Tip: Make sure you do your body composition at the beginning and end of the program so you can really see the results of your hard work!

I’m excited for the January Challenge. My goal will be to continue to improve my lean mass while maintaining my weight loss. The Challenge is for anyone who wants to change their body composition or remain healthy & fit ~ not just those who need to lose weight.

Q: Do you think you would be in the body you have right now without having done THE BODY CHALLENGE? And you can be honest!!! I know my questions are quite leading!!!

Definitely not! I might have lost some more weight, but I would have been skinny/fat if you know what I mean. The nutrition plan, along with the strength training IS the answer to begin Healthy & Fit and the Fitness Asylum will help you get there!

Q: What advice to have for others looking to improve their body composition and health?

It’s never too late to become healthy & fit. Don’t think about it, just DO IT. There’s only one person preventing you from achieving your goals – YOU. No more excuses!

Q: How has this weight loss changed your life?

I’m more confident and feel a lot better about getting older because I know I don’t have to be a statistic. I’m in control of my destiny and I love it.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
