I first joined the Fitness Asylum’s Body Challenge in the fall of 2012. I had always been what I considered a “healthy” eater. I loved fruits and vegetables; however, I loved my sweets. I found that I didn’t have the amount of energy that I needed for my activities such as running, dance, hockey, and working out. I decided to join more for the nutritional information. I learned a lot and got stronger over the 12 week challenge. I definitely wasn’t eating enough protein and servings of healthy fruits and vegetables. I will admit that I still had my “daily cheat” during the challenge but I was able to be successful in weight loss and building muscle.

Over the next year and a half, I continued to work out at the Asylum with boxing, bootcamp, and bootymelt classes. Then one day this past winter, I got wind of the Bikini Challenge. My eating was ok but I had got back into the habit of eating bad snacks at night. I always like to challenge myself so I decided to sign up. I also decided to do the stage portion of the challenge because I knew it would make me be totally accountable with no “daily cheats.” I hadn’t worn a bikini since before I had kids. The first meeting was very inspiring and I was committed. I would have to say that the first week was the worst because I had binged the two weeks before on all the things I knew I wouldn’t be able to eat….especially my treats! I paid for it! The sugar detox was tough but I made it through. From there on, I started to notice how much better I was feeling. Thankfully, I took Bonnie’s advice and took my measurements. I only lost a few pounds the first 4 weeks but I lost inches right away. I was amazed at how quickly my body was changing but the scale stayed the same. Also, my clothes felt looser.

The connection with all of the other women was amazing! It was great to get feedback on our Facebook page. Just when you thought you were the only one feeling a certain way, someone would post something to make you feel like you weren’t alone. We also had many laughs along the way…..talking about the stripper heels, food porn, family members complaining of the smells, etc. It was so much easier to do as a group. This included the posing classes and the actual event. Everyone was so supportive of one another. Who else would sit in a room that was 100 degrees getting spray tanned and eating rice cakes with almond butter while depriving ourselves of water! And what can I say about all the other FA girls who came to support us!

One of the best days for me was the day after my dance recital, which was a week after the competition. I have danced for over 30 years and after every recital I have always been tired and sore. After eating clean for 10 weeks and dancing in 5 dances at my show, I was not sore or tired! I felt the best I have in years!
