When I was in my 40’s, I was in the best shape of my life- sculpted muscles, running 6 miles a week with ideal body weight and BMI.Next came, divorce, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, slowing metabolism and knee pain. I was told by a sports medicine physician to stop running or I’d be looking at knee replacements in my 80’s. That was devastating to me and no matter what form of exercise or dietary plan I tried- my weight kept creeping up and over time I became the dreaded word- OBESE! I thought I was doomed to repeat my family history of obesity, high blood pressure and eventual heart disease. As a nurse practicing holistic, integrative medicine with an interest in functional medicine, following in my family history of demise was NOT a palatable option for me. A friend introduced to me to the Fitness Asylum. I noticed her transformation and awaited my turn to enter the program.

My first challenge was in the Fall and I saw immediate results of weight loss and feeling better following Bonnie Lefrak’s advice with support of my Team Captain Amy Madore Dee. At 65 years old, I lost 19 lbs. and began to define my life by what I could do instead of what I couldn’t do or control at my senior citizen age! That initial success through the FA changed my perspective, my attitude and my life. I began to live my life feeling vibrant and hopeful, enjoying being called a sexy badass by my close friend. My body is not only outwardly but its changing inside too. My blood pressure is lower, my cholesterol levels dropping, my thyroid profile improving. I feel great because of the tools taught to me through Bonnie Lefrak’s program. She has combined the science of whole30, Paleo and clean eating nutrition with over 20 years of knowledge of sports medicine training. Bonnie’s obvious commitment to spreading health and fitness pearls and is allows thinking about how to keep fitness interesting and motivating people to believe in themselves and their personal goals. Bonnie has hand picked staff that are of the mindset of nurturing support, motivation and kicking butts when enrollees start on the slippery slope of not following through.

I have learned how to succeed and maintain my weight loss. Better yet I have learned lifelong tools in regard to observing my weaknesses and moving past my self sabotaging behavior and getting back on track. This is not a get well quick, lose weight quickly magic pill program. It is a program designed to motivate us succeed for life! I have maintained my initial weight loss and I have 20 more pounds to go. I move forward in life having erasing the past 25 years of “ what in God’s name is happening to my health and body” with the agility and confidence of a “renewed 40 year old” using the right tools provided to me through the Fitness Asylum.
